I’ve been interested in food and how it impacts my health since I was a teenager – I’m in my early 50s now. However, through the years, I haven’t always chosen to eat well. In fact, there were many times in my 20s and 30s that I didn’t put much thought into what I was eating, or when I did, I didn’t eat well or take supplements for very long. I would get started, but wasn’t consistent. I wasted a lot of money.

I had a lot of excuses for taking the ‘easy’ way out about food and not keeping my promises to myself. I was busy building a career and I had a difficult first marriage to cope with. Stress, and not handling it well, was a big problem for me. Sometimes I ate junk food for comfort, sometimes to avoid meal preparation time, sometimes because I was depressed and didn’t care what I ate. Many times I had popcorn for dinner or I was so exhausted by working late that I ate nothing at all.

In my mid-40s, my once always-slim body began to take on a new ‘fuller’ look. That really made me feel miserable. Combined with problems I had with my defiant teenager, I began to feel fat, old and hopeless because the weight wasn’t coming off on its own. I indulged in a negative ‘what’s the use of trying?’ attitude and for awhile, I ate whatever I wanted. Well, you know what happened because of that decision. :-)

By the time I needed to lose 20 lbs., I felt really stuck. I had never been on a diet and already knew that wasn’t an option because diets don’t work. You may have experienced this yourself: you lose some weight, go back to your old eating habits and you put back all the weight you lost, plus a few more pounds for good measure! To avoid what was really happening, I indulged in a little ‘magical thinking’ – the weight would come off if I just ate less food and exercised, but that strategy, oddly enough, made me feel deprived, unmotivated and even more depressed! :-) And, I ended up gaining even more weight!
