Lifestyle choices to reduce or eliminate uterine fibroids

Are you one of the 30 percent of women who will have a hysterectomy by age 60 because of complications from uterine fibroids? I hope not and more than hope, there are many things to you can do to help yourself heal.

I’ve written about fibroids in several of my blogs but they’re such a pervasive problem for women in their perimenopausal years that I’ve put together a few key healthy lifestyle suggestions and natural remedies that are relatively easy to do. Choose as many of these suggestions as seem right to you. Fibroids are stubborn benign grows in the uterus and require patience and persistence to heal. It’s worth the effort if your fibroids are painful, cause heavy periods that lead to anemia or if your fibroids are getting in the way of your desire to become pregnant.

The causes of uterine fibroids are many – including hormonal changes during perimenopause and unresolved emotional issues that I’ve explored in earlier blog posts.

Estrogens, especially estradiol, promote fibroid growth and you want to avoid larger fibroids that can cause pain, infertility and make you look like you’re pregnant when all you want is a flatter stomach! The good news is that after menopause, when estrogen levels are low, fibroids shrink to disappear completely.

Below are a few lifestyle suggestions that may help reduce or eliminate your fibroids.

  • Avoid stress
  • Exercise helps insure regular ovulation, and that’s important because irregular ovulation seems to worsen fibroids.
  • Herbalist Susun Weed says that consuming three or more servings of whole grains or beans daily not only reduces the size of fibroids but offers protection from breast and endometrial cancers as well.
  • Eat more of the following estrogen-inhibiting foods:
  • Berries
  • Broccoli
  • Buckwheat
  • Cabbage
  • Citrus Foods
  • Corn
  • Figs
  • Flaxseeds (ground up) are a great source of phytoestrogens, which regulates estrogen production in the body.
  • Fruits (except apples, cherries, dates, pomegranates)
  • Grapes
  • Green beans
  • Melons
  • Millet
  • Onions
  • Pears
  • Pineapples
  • Squashes
  • Strengthening the liver with herbs such as dandelion, milk thistle seed, or yellow dock root helps it metabolize estrogen out of the body, thus reducing fibroids.
  • Weed says vitex or chasteberry tincture, 25-30 drops two to four times daily, often shrinks small fibroids within two months. But results come from long-term use — up to two years.
  • Supplement with Vitamin D (10,000 or more IU daily)
  • Eat sea vegetables because they contain iodine which can inhibit fibroid growth
  • Most experts agree that warm castor oil packs on the belly, or ginger compresses (soak a towel in hot ginger water) relieve pain and help shrink the fibroids.

How to Prepare and Use Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs/poultices are helpful in treating endometriosis, fibroids, fibrocystic breasts, ovarian cysts, cystitis, blocked fallopian tubes. Castor oil helps heal warts, callouses and corns. Preliminary studies on castor oil packs done in the U.S. indicate that they improve immune system functioning.

Apply in one of two ways:

  1. For 4 nights consecutively, then stop for 3 nights and repeat for several months.
  2. For at least three times per week, except during times of heavy bleeding. Repeat for at least three months and then taper down to once a week.

Materials Required

  • The Palma Christi Castor Oil, or other cold pressed, certified organic castor oil.
  • A clean cotton cloth, big enough to fold 3-4 times and cover the area to be treated.
  • Double boiler or steel bowl.
  • Olive oil or healing ointment
  • Plastic wrap
  • Dry towel
  • Hot water bottle
  • Large zipper freezer bag

Directions:
Pour castor oil in a double boiler or in a steel bowl. Heat gently over boiling water or place the bowl of oil in a warm oven. Do not use a microwave oven.

Soak the cloth in the warm oil and wring out so it is wet but not runny.

Lie down and rub the area to be treated with healing ointment or olive oil.

Place the castor-oil soaked cloth on the area to be treated.

Cover with plastic wrap, a dry towel and a hot water bottle (not a heating pad) to keep the area as warm as possible.

Leave on for one hour.

Remove and wrap castor oil cloth in plastic wrap to re-use (can be used for a couple of months before you need to wash the cloth). The next night, heat the cloth in a steel bowl in the oven. If necessary, add more castor oil to the cloth.

During treatment…

  • Pay attention to thoughts, images and feelings that arise and note them in a journal.
  • Listen to relaxing music, if desired.
  • Make sure you won’t be disturbed during your treatment.
