Phytoestrogenic herbs and how they can help distressing menopause symptoms

As you know, my intention is to have a completely ‘natural’ menopause experience without foreign hormones or chemicals because menopause is a natural life transition, not an illness.

Bioidentical hormones are not ‘natural’ because they are used as medications to alter our body’s natural estrogen levels to those of a younger woman, which disrupts, and may stop the natural adaptive abilities of our own bodies. There are risks involved with every medication and I believe the vast majority of women can easily handle their menopause discomforts with food, cleansing and herbs.  Our stress-filled lives, junk food, alcohol consumption, poor quality sleep, other lifestyle choices and environmental factors may combine to make things difficult during the menopause transition. That’s the time to use natural remedies to smooth the rough edges.

Phytoestrogenic foods and herbs are frequently recommended to help improve many menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, anxiety and irritability, mood swings and ’brain fog’.

Phytoestrogens are different from estrogens although not enough research has been done to determine at what levels  they can contribute towards the growth of cancerous cells. When used in the whole-plant state – meaning not an extract – they can ease estrogen spikes and make menopause easier.

Herbal phytoestrogens work by binding to estrogen receptors in the body and that helps balance the body’s own estrogen levels. If estrogen levels are too high, phytoestrogens occupy the estrogen receptors instead of the stronger human version of the hormone.

Herbalist Susun Weed says “Virtually everything we eat — grains, beans, nuts, seeds, seed oils, berries, fruits, vegetables, and roots — contains phytoestrogens. Scientists measuring the amount of phytoestrogen break-down by-products in the urine of healthy women found that those with the least were four times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than with the most. Phytoestrogens actually appear to protect tissues from the cancer-causing effects of xenoestrogens and other hormonal pollutants.”

Weed says problems can occur when “the difference between food and medicine is disregarded, when phytoestrogens are isolated and concentrated, sold to us in pills and candy bars, then the equation changes: phytoestrogens become dangerous hormones, quite capable of promoting cancer.”

I use 1 tbsp ground flax seeds in my morning shake or I stir it into yogurt. I learned the hard way it’s best to start slowly with 1 tsp. daily to avoid intestinal gas!

Herbs that have a pronounced phytoestrogenic effect include Vitex, Dong Quai, Red Clover, Black Cohosh, Ginseng, and Gingko Biloba. Herbs with a milder hormone-balancing effect include seaweed, parsley, and the adaptogenic root herb maca from Peru and Bolivia.

Foods that contain phytoestrogens include soy milk,  alfalfa sprouts, soybean sprouts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chestnuts, almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, walnuts, anise/fennel, garlic, celery, green beans, beets, carrots, winter squash, olives, kidney beans, lentils, dried prunes, strawberries, peaches, cherries, apples and fresh fruits and vegetables in general. These foods and herbs stimulate a woman’s own hormone production by nourishing the endocrine system and glands.
