Best headache secrets revealed

natural menopause migraine solutions, perimenopause headaches, home headache remediesDo you suffer from frequent headaches now that you’re in your 40s or 50s?

It may surprise you to know that all headaches are not created equal!

There are at least 18 different types of headaches and you can feel their pain in several locations on your head.

The closest thing to a headache cure-all is the first natural headache remedy I recommend is EFT – Emotional Freedom Techniques.

Headaches connected to a woman’s hormone levels can occur premenstrually, during menstruation and periodically around menopause. They may be directly related to fluctuating hormone levels or appear because of anxiety, tension or a poor response to on-going stress that worsens hormone challenges.

The vast majority of headaches, even hormone-related ones, are caused by past trauma, stress, toxicity or most commonly, some combination of the three.

Most women turn to an over-the-counter pain reliever at the first sign of a headache, not realizing that there may be a better first choice. It’s always a good idea to find the cause of your headache and treat the cause, not the symptom. Long-term overreliance on non-prescription painkillers (more than 4 times a week) can make chronic headaches worse by interfering with the brain’s natural ability to fight headaches and drugs can harm your liver.

Headaches can be triggered by hormones, tension, sports-related or  theme park ride injury, weather changes, too much or too little sleep, allergies, skipping meals or too stringent dieting, overeating, lack of exercise, caffeine withdrawal, alcohol, smoking, uncorrected vision, infection, severe high blood pressure, jaw clenching or teeth grinding, emotional stress, worry, anxiety, depression, anger, poor posture, excessive dilation or contraction of blood vessels of the brain. Whew!

And that’s not all…several foods and food additives are known to trigger migraines or dull headaches in some people. These include aspartame, monosodium glutamate, nitrites, alcohol, bananas, cheese, chicken, chocolate, citrus fruits, cold cuts, herring, onions, peanut butter, pork, smoked fish, sour cream, vinegar, wine and fresh-baked yeast products. Eliminate these foods and re-introduce them one by one to find your headache culprits.

Hormone fluctuations cause blood vessels to dilate, triggering menstruation or menopausal migraines or headaches. Research indicates that up to 60 percent of migraines in women are menstrual-related.

If you suspect your headaches may be related to your up and down estrogen levels at menopause, take heart. Your headache problems will likely go away after menopause. Meanwhile, you can take supplements: B vitamins, potassium and extra magnesium and cleanse your body of toxins every week with an Isagenix nutritional cleanse.

Natural remedies that have proven to be effective at alleviating painful headaches include…

  • Emotional Freedom Techniques (Tapping)
  • Biofeedback and relaxation therapy
  • Hypnosis
  • Chiropractic manipulation
  • Acupuncture
  • Massage
  • Homeopathy – common remedies useful at menopause that also relieve headaches include Sepia, Pulsatilla, Lachesis, and Sanguinaria.
  • Herbal remedies – Take 2-3 cups tea or 12 to 20 drops tincture of your choice of cayenne, peppermint, dong quai, devi’s claw or ginkgo biloba. Feverfew, when used regularly, can eliminate or greatly reduce the frequency and severity of headaches and migraines.
  • Aromatherapy – Apply 2-3 drops your choice of oil or oils to a handkerchief and inhale, as needed: vitex, lavender, chamomile, marjoram, rosemary, immortelle, basil, grapefruit, lemon, eucalyptus.

Healthy lifestyle choices can help you to prevent headaches:

  • Eat mostly fruit and vegetables, and do not skip meals.
  • Drink 2-3 litres of water daily to keep your body hydrated.
  • Exercise every day to improve your circulation
  • Use relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises and Reiki to reduce the intensity of a headache.
  • Keep a headache journal to document each headache – how long it lasted, when it happened and you can do a few rounds of EFT on what you think triggered it.
  • Apply your choice of an ice pack to your forehead and temples, or a heat pack to the back of your neck to loosen tense muscles.
  • Soak in a hot tub with 8 drops lavender essential oil to relax the contracted muscles. You could do a few rounds of EFT while you’re in the bath too!
  • Spend time outside in the fresh air or go for a walk on the beach.
  • Limit or eliminate alcohol consumption.
  • Limit hours spent in front of a computer screen. Take a 5-minute break every hour.
  • Avoid watching television for too long or in a dimly-lit room.
  • Go to sleep by 10 pm intending to sleep for at least 8 hours.
