Poor cardio health is linked to poor cognitive function

A study of British middle-aged adults found that those who exhibited cardiovascular risk factors such as high cholesterol and hypertension performed worse on cognitive-function tests than those with better cardiovascular health.

Researchers explained that high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol and inactivity can contribute to a narrowing of the large blood vessels throughout the body, but also the small blood vessels of the brain. Those changes can reduce blood flow, which can starve the brain of oxygen and lead to changes in thinking, cognition and mental abilities

Though the 3,500 men and 1,500 women in the study did not have Alzheimer’s, other research suggests that hypertension, diabetes and poor cardiovascular health are a risk factor for both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.

 The study suggested…middle-aged adults can take steps to improve cardiovascular health, including eating a proper diet, exercising, controlling diabetes if they have it and, if applicable, taking the correct medications for hypertension.

The results of this study show that heart health is more important than we knew. The study’s researchers observed a relationship between poor cardiovascular scores and overall cognitive decline over 10 years.

It’s left up to the individual to find and make healthy lifestyle choices, and many (most?) people can’t be bothered with such a huge task. Even though the choices may seem simple, it seems to be human nature to resist change regardless of evidence for it.

I met a man recently who had had a heart attack two years previously. He and his wife are still heavy smokers. “I thought that a heart attack would be enough to make me quit, but it wasn’t,” he told me. “A few days after the operation, I started smoking again.”

I’ve found that unless you’re ready to make a change, you won’t, despite a long list of ‘shoulds’.

There are reasons why people smoke that go beyond physical addiction. People innately understand this, but many are reluctant to seriously examine these reasons. Connecting a physical experience to an emotional cause seems ‘too far out there’ or worse, it touches on painful, personal hurts and fears that the person would rather not think about or even admit.

Of course, there are herbs and nutrients that nourish and strengthen the heart, but unless you get to the underlying cause of a problem, you’ll never be successful at solving it. Conventional medicine treats symptoms only.
