25 Ways to Stay Positive Even On Your Worst Days

Everyone has bad days, or at least ‘wall-kicking moments’.

Feeling frustration, anger, or sadness about something in your business, home or family life? Experiencing a hormonal fluctuation that’s causing anxiety, mood swings or sadness at menopause?

Research indicates that on average, 60-80% of people, especially women, have low serotonin levels, which can lead into a downward spiral of hopelessness and despair. These negative feelings, thoughts and moods take us away from abundance, towards attracting more negative experiences. This is your ‘clue’ not to indulge in negativity – EVER.

Choose one or more of the practical suggestions below, in advance, to improve your energy when those negative moments threaten to take over. You’ll be better able to control your mind, feel happier and get back to attracting abundance in all areas of your life.

1. Take time for yourself every day. You need time alone, to do what you want so you can recharge your energies. If you give, give, give all the time, you’ll be out of balance. Women, in particular are trained since childhood to think they have to give until it hurts or they’re not doing it right. Learn to be both a generous giver and an excellent receiver!

2. Play uplifting music as you work at your desk, do dishes or housework. Suggestions: Mozart, New Age music, soothing instrumentals, classical music, light rock, folk or easy listening. Skip the sad love songs. Create an iPod playlist with songs that have positive lyrics that reinforce how magnificent you are, right now. If you can’t think of any such songs, try searching on iTunes or YouTube.

3. Read an uplifting book or listen to a self-help CD: Wayne Dyer, Abraham-Hicks, Marianne Williamson, Jack Canfield, and Susan Jeffers are highly recommended self-help authors.

4. Ask yourself: Am I feeding fear, or focusing on what I want? You know what to do now!

5. Sing – choose a song in advance that cheers you. Sing it until you feel better.

6. Get out of the house and go for a walk, ideally in nature and in the sunshine. Taking a break changes your state by interrupting your negative train of thought and providing new stimuli. Don’t think about your problems as you walk. Clear your head, be fully present and make a point of noticing and appreciating what’s around you.

7. Exercise on a home fitness machine e.g. rebounder, or do a few yoga moves e.g. Legs up the wall, Downward dog, etc.

8. Take a break Do your favorite hobby or craft, or play your musical instrument for awhile – if it’s relaxing. You could also visit a museum, go to the theater, the symphony, or watch TV or films about love stories, comedies and other feel-good movies.

9. Use your favorite aromatherapy oil. Add 2-3 drops of your choice of lavender, chamomile, neroli or geranium essential oil to a tissue, cotton ball or hankie. Inhale as needed throughout the day.

10. Take an herbal tea break! Place 1 tsp of dried loose herbs, or 1 teabag of soothing chamomile, oatstraw, lemonbalm, lavender, or a combination, into a cup of just-boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and enjoy. Have a cup several times a day.

11. Eat some healthy carbs to cause a rise in insulin levels that send the amino acid tryptophan into your brain. Tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin. One and a half ounces of a carbohydrate food (e.g. 1/4 cup hot oatmeal cereal, a piece of sourdough or Ezekiel bread or a serving of yams, sweet potatoes or squash) will significantly boost brain levels of serotonin.

12. Meditate, pray or practice positive visualization. All have been proven to boost serotonin levels and your feelings of well being, relaxed concentration and peace.

13. Ask for help from your spiritual guides, angels, Jesus or whomever you feel a high vibrational connection with in the spiritual realm.

14. Do a breathing exercise. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes and breathe in slowly to the count of 3. Breathe out to the count of 5.

15. Pat your pet or play with her. Appreciate how perfect she is as she ‘smiles’ up at you! ? No pet? Go to the park and feed the squirrels. You’ll make their day!

16. Engage in long, deep conversations with one or two other positive people – about them and their interests. Keep your focus away from your troubles for awhile!

17. Tidy, clean and organize your environment every day! A messy office or desk is an energy stealer. Clear your desk and your desktop every evening before you leave it. You’ll be able to start fresh in the morning.

18. Bring joy into your life every day. What simple thing makes your heart sing? What makes you feel indulged? Suggestions: take a book, your iPod, your laptop or netbook to a coffee house and spend part of your day working there, have breakfast at a restaurant, put cinnamon in your coffee, soak in an Epsoms salt bath by candlelight, etc.

19. Shop for something you’ve needed for awhile e.g. socks, underwear or go to a bookstore and browse. (Tip: buy through their on-line store and save money!)

20. Get into the feeling of gratitude. Gratitude is an automatic mood changer. When you write down what you’re grateful for, you’ll instantly raise your emotional set point and feel happier. Focus on anything you’re sincerely grateful for in your life. Appreciating can be even easier. Walk around your home, or while you’re driving, look at things and people and feel appreciation for them.

21. Smile and open your eyes wide for a few minutes! Really! It sounds weird, but you’ve heard of ‘fake it ‘til you make it! Your mind will think you’re delighted. (Tip: do this when you’re alone!)

22. Imagine you just won the lottery and think about all the ways you’d spend your millions.

23. Watch Something That Makes You LOL. Search You Tube for funny clips from TV shows and comedians, or look for ones featuring animals or babies. Make a folder in your web browser that’s dedicated to “Funny Stuff” and take a look when you want to lighten-up e.g. “America’s Funniest Videos”.

24. Carry out a random act of kindness with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day, someone might do the same for you.” – Princess Diana

25. Show someone you care and you could change a life – a hug, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, words of appreciation all matter and can make a huge difference in someone’s life. “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” – William James

NOTE: If you have past experiences that overshadow your life today and may be at the root of ongoing sadness or depression, please consider finding help to work through and release your old ‘junk’ that’s holding you back. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an excellent tool to release painful memories forever.
