Hot flashes reduced by folic acid

A recent 4-week study involving a group of 46 post-menopausal women found that folic acid, a B-vitamin, significantly reduced the number and intensity of their hot flashes.

Hot flashes occur in up to 75 percent of menopausal women and are linked to a reduction in estrogen levels.

“Although the data are encouraging, the long-term merits of folic acid and the ideal dosage have to be assessed in a multi-centre, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of appropriate size and duration.”

Folic acid is an antioxidant that is believed to protect against oxidative stress and free radical damage. It assists in energy production and the formation of blood cells. Researchers have found that low folate levels in the blood are associated with Alzheimer’s type dementia.

A daily B-vitamin complex supplement – liquid or capsule – benefits women undergoing stress of any kind – PMS and menopause included. For example, most women who experience hot flashes would agree that they’re stressful, so taking a high potency B-vitamin complex, with folic acid, every day is an excellent idea.

I had to laugh when I read that researchers in this study want to do more research on how folic acid affects hot flashes. Why is it necessary to find the ideal dosage when science already knows that taking a daily B-complex supplement provides many benefits? B-vitamins work better together and are water-soluable. This means you likely don’t need a separate folic acid supplement and your body will use what you need that day from your multi-B supplement and release what you don’t need in your urine. Overdosing isn’t an issue.

Experimenting with a good quality B-vitamin complex supplement for two to four weeks should be enough to tell a woman if additional folic works to reduce hot flashes for her. Over time she may discover other benefits from taking a B-complex supplement such as greater energy, concentration, memory and balance, reduced stress, better circulation and immune function, reduced cholesterol levels, improved digestion and stomach muscle tone, better eye function, and healthier, younger-looking skin.
