Make Menopause a Non-Issue – Part 2

If you’ve already started to make your menopause a non-issue, congratulations and keep going! There’s no better time than now to feel happy and vibrant, and it really does come from nurturing yourself!

Week 5

Increase your water intake. Not just any water, mind you – pure filtered water that’s pH balanced is essential  for long-term good health. Water keeps your cells hydrated and your skin fresh and firm, allows nutrients to be transported, lubricates your joints, creates saliva, sweat and other body fluids, regulates body temperature and helps your bowels function.  Drink 2 to 3 liters/quarts of water daily!

Week 6

Reduce stress. Sounds obvious or impossible, but reducing stress is essential to having a long, healthy life. Stress raises blood pressure and cortisol, a hormone that helps you cope in an emergency situation. When stress hormones are constantly high, it leads to negative, age-promoting effects such as blood sugar problems, abdominal fat, decreased muscles, more inflammation and reduced ability to fight off disease.

 Did you know that your stomach releases a hormone called ghrelin, that makes you feel hungry…

  • if you haven’t eaten enough,
  • if you haven’t eaten in a long time,
  • when you haven’t slept enough and need to boost your energy levels
  • in times of stress—which is why many people with high stress office jobs want to snack all the time.

How can you stop the cravings in a healthy way? Have a nutrient-rich, low-calorie protein bar or shake to satisfy these cravings instead of junk foods.

Week 7

Eat more fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables! Mom was right. There’s no substitute for eating veggies and fruit. Remember, everything you eat becomes part of you. Buy fresh ingredients at the grocery store and learn to cook. Consistently make healthy food choices and you’ll be able to have an occasional dessert, bag of chips or alcoholic drink guilt-free. And, cutting down on calorie intake has been shown to increase life-expectancy.

Week 8

Stop harmful habits. One drag on a cigarette contains 1,017 oxidizing molecules that cannot be remedied by taking antioxidant supplements. In addition to increasing your cancer risk, smoking creates lines, wrinkles and skin damage. Never smoked? How about your alcohol consumption? A glass of wine with dinner every night is a recipe for weight gain!
